Mount Hope Baptist Church

Organized and built in the late 19th century by former slaves following the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, Mount Hope Baptist Church was initially established as a wood frame structure whose founding name was Bethel Church under the stewardship of it's first pastor, Reverend Peter Berry in the Holly Brook district of Prince George, Virginia.
For indefinite reasons and at an indeterminate time later, Bethel Church was renamed Mount Hope Baptist Church. Having sought to retrieve this documentation through official or oral tradition has regrettably been for naught. Unfortunately, neither community archives nor our church has any record of this transaction in our early church history.
As a late 19th century place of faith formation and African-American social striving in southern Virginia, free Blacks were irresistibly drawn to Mount Hope's liberation theology and spirit-filled worship. While many lived in the vicinity of the church, other early congregants came by horse, horse and buggy and made their way for miles by foot for fellowship, prayer, praise, proclamation, political and social affirmation and empowerment.
Mount Hope Baptist is a culturally relevant and multi-cultural community of faith serving the collegiate community of Virginia State University, the military troops of Fort Lee, Virginia, and the residents of Hopewell, Petersburg and Prince George, Virginia.
As a historic hub for social and spiritual empowerment, we are gratified that Mount Hope Baptist remains a strategic social and spiritual partner in the enhancement and advancement of humanity throughout Petersburg, Virginia, the State of Virginia and across the nation.
Join us for Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. and Praise and Worship at 11:00 a.m. Also, we welcome you to our Discovery Bible Study held each Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
